About the Mont Saint-Michel

A granite island, an abbey begun in 708, and the biggest tides in continental Europe moving around both.

Mont Saint-Michel is a granite island in the bay between Normandy and Brittany, about ninety-two metres high and seven hectares across, carrying a Benedictine abbey begun in 708. Around it the sea retreats for kilometres and returns across the sand at a pace that has shaped every story told about the place. The village below the abbey is free and never closes; the abbey itself sells a timed ticket, keeps its own seasonal hours, and stops admitting visitors an hour before it shuts.

The abbey

Founded after the archangel Michael appeared to Aubert of Avranches in 708, rebuilt in stone from 1023, crowned by the thirteenth-century Merveille, and used as a state prison until 1863. What you climb through today runs from the almonry at the bottom to the west terrace at the top.

The bay

Inscribed by UNESCO in 1979 as “Mont-Saint-Michel and its Bay”, 6,560 hectares of property inside a buffer zone thirty times larger. The causeway that silted it up was replaced in 2014 by a bridge on piles so the tide can scour the sand again.

Planning your visit

Hours change on 1 May and 1 September, last admission is an hour before closing, and the car park sits 2.5 km from the gate with a free shuttle between. Get those four facts right and the rest of the day looks after itself.

Do you need a tour to visit Mont Saint-Michel?

The island charges nothing to enter and never closes. Only the abbey sells a ticket, so a mont saint michel abbey tour is the one thing worth paying for on the rock itself. Where you sleep decides whether you need help with the journey too.

Coming from ParisYou almost certainly do. There is no direct train. Doing it on public transport means a TGV to Rennes, a connecting bus, and roughly four hours each way before you have seen anything — which is why a coach day trip exists and why so many people book one.
Staying in Normandy or BrittanyProbably not, unless you want a guide. From Bayeux, Saint-Malo or Rennes you can drive, park and take the free shuttle in well under two hours. A tour from Bayeux buys you a guide and someone else’s driving, not access you could not get alone.

What to expect

How the Day Runs, Car Park to West Terrace

Every arrival goes through the same five stages, whether you drove yourself or came on a coach.

Park at Beauvoir

Cars stop 2.5 km out. The first half hour is free; after that it runs €10 to €28 for the day depending on the season.

Take Le Passeur

The shuttle is free all year and runs every few minutes. It sets you down 350 metres short of the gate, so the last stretch is on foot either way.

Climb the Grande Rue

One street, about 200 steps, and every shop and inn on the island. It is busiest between eleven and three.

Enter the abbey

Around 150 more steps inside. Last admission is an hour before closing, which is the rule that catches people who arrive at four.

Watch the tide turn

Mont Saint-Michel ticket prices, the tide, the steps and the rule that shuts the abbey door an hour before closing.

How much does it cost to visit Mont Saint-Michel Abbey?

Full adult admission is €16. The village, the Grande Rue and the ramparts below the abbey are free and open at all hours — the ticket buys you the abbey itself.

Do I need to book abbey tickets in advance?

You do not have to, but a timed slot means you walk past the ticket window rather than queue at it, and slots for the middle of the day go first in summer. Most organised departures include the ticket in the fare.

Do tours include the abbey ticket?

Most do, and the ones that do not say so. Both cruise excursions from Le Havre leave abbey admission out, one island walking tour includes it only on certain booking grades, and one private walk excludes entrance tickets entirely.

Can I get a refund if I cancel?

On most departures here, yes — in full, up to 24 hours before you travel. Three trips want a week’s notice and the abbey entry ticket is non-refundable outright, and each of those says so on its own card.

How do I get to Mont Saint-Michel from Paris?

There is no direct train. Public transport means a TGV to Rennes and a connecting bus, around four hours each way, which is why almost everyone travelling from Paris books a coach or minivan day trip instead.

Can I drive right up to the island?

You can drive to the mainland car park, which sits 2.5 km from the island. Private cars go no closer: from there it is the free shuttle, a horse-drawn Maringotte, or about forty minutes on foot across the bridge.

How much is parking?

The first thirty minutes are free all year. After that a car pays €14 for up to 24 hours in low season, €22 in mid season and €28 between 1 July and 31 August, with €2 off for booking online.

Is the shuttle to Mont Saint-Michel free?

Yes. Le Passeur runs every day of the year at no charge — the parking fee is what pays for it. It drops you 350 metres from the ramparts, so there is a short walk at the end either way.

How many steps are there?

Around 200 up the Grande Rue from the gate to the abbey entrance, and around 150 more inside the abbey itself. Roughly 350 in total, and there is no lift.

How long do I need at Mont Saint-Michel?

About four hours is what most organised departures allow, and it is enough for the abbey, the ramparts and lunch without hurrying. Under three hours and the shuttle queue starts eating into the abbey.

What time should I arrive to avoid the crowds?

Before ten in the morning or after four in the afternoon. The coach parties from Paris arrive in the middle of the day, which is exactly when travellers describe the Grande Rue as hard to move along.

When does Mont Saint-Michel become an island?

Only on the biggest tides, a handful of days a year, when the sea covers the car park causeway and surrounds the rock completely. The 2014 bridge stands on piles so the water can pass beneath it rather than damming the bay.

How big are the tides?

The bay swings about fourteen metres between low and high water, the largest tidal range in continental Europe. At low tide the sea withdraws several kilometres; at the highest it returns across the sand fast enough to cut off anyone walking on it.

When is the best time of year to visit?

May to September gives you the abbey’s longer hours, 09:00 to 19:00, and the warmest weather. From September to April the abbey closes at 18:00, parking is cheaper and the island is quieter.

Is Mont-Saint-Michel a castle?

No. It is a Benedictine abbey on a tidal island, founded in 708 and built up in stone over eight centuries. It was heavily fortified, and its ramparts held through an English siege from 1423 to 1434, which is probably why the question keeps coming up.
